Fitness equipment such as cross trainers, treadmills and exercise bikes are very popular at home. Exercise equipment rubbing on the floor is a very well-known problem. Several unpleasant stains can appear rapidly on the carpet or parquet floor. Like other sports equipment, an ergometer, for instance, has a relatively higher weight.

Consider an equipment floor mat if your daily workout interferes with your neighbors’ privacy or damages your expensive flooring.  Among other names, we call them floor protection mats or treadmill mats. These mats are usually included with fitness equipment.

Why buy an equipment floor mat?

These equipment mats are designed for use with stationary exercise equipment that you have in your gym or home. As a result, you can safely place the treadmill or ergometer inside your home on a wooden or carpeted surface. It is common for the pressure points to remain visible on the carpet when you place the exercise machine on the carpet. The equipment mat prevents any staining or a pressure point.

Occasionally, parquet flooring will get scratches from equipment. It is thus best to use an underlay mat to protect the floor. Mats made of different materials are available depending on the kind of flooring.

You can use vinyl composite mats and PVC mats for exercise equipment, as they have insulating and protective properties. Transparent or colored, these mats come in different sizes. Buyers prefer transparent models as they are almost universally acceptable. Besides improving the protection on a floor, the mats help decrease the sound level that will be appreciated by your neighbors.

What models and variants are available?

Floor protection mats are designed for different purposes. Depending on the model, the thickness/strength also differs considerably. It can range from around 0.3 cm for super thin models up to 1.5 cm for super thick and sound-absorbing models.

Underlay chair mats differ from fitness equipment mats used in offices. The exercise machines have the variant that’s slightly thicker. A wide array of popular sporting goods manufacturers carry these mats. The mats are usually made of polyethylene, vinyl, or rubber.

You can also get puzzle mats and thick multipurpose exercise mats made of rubber or foam that are softer materials. Their purpose is to cushion the impact of various exercises during weight training. If an area is large enough, this mat can be extended further with interlock tiles.

Each user has their own personal taste in a design. The prices of these mats vary a lot. Therefore, you can purchase low-priced underlay mats, as well as more luxurious ones that are pricey. Optical variety, thickness and requirements all influence the pricing.

Advantages of floor protection mats

No matter what material it is, an underlay mat protects many surfaces. Here, fitness equipment is constantly causing damage to the floor, making it necessary to protect it. It’s also important to minimize the noise from fitness machines, because they tend to cause problems between neighbors.

You place the exercise equipment on these mats so you can protect the floor from scratches and damage. Also, they significantly muffle vibrations during training and rattles when you pick up and drop heavy weights onto the floor.

If you’ve ever trained with a weight bench in an apartment that has an “unprotected” floor, you are careful so that the floor does not suffer any damage. Hence, floor protection mats are crucial since they allow intensive fitness activities.

Floor protection

Bodybuilding and weight training equipment mats are typically made from rubber granules about 1cm thick. The plastic material is pliable and helps prevent the floor from being scratched during training. The equipment mat is relatively thinner than a floor mat, but is more stiff.

Slip resistance

Slip resistance is another positive property. The cross-trainers and weight benches occasionally shake during intense training. With every training movement, they slide on unprotected floors. With a non-slip mat, the equipment stays put.

Noise reduction

Floor mats reduce noise during training events because of their structure and their soft material composition. Furthermore, you can place weight plates safely on the floor.

Protection from dirt and sweat

It is also beneficial that dirt (e.g. from shoes) and sweat are collected in a way that prevents damaging the floor.

What should you pay attention to when buying?

Consider the following factors when purchasing the floor protection mat:

Buy a sufficiently large model

You need a precise measurement of the assembled training device in order to determine the optimal size. In addition to fitting the mat perfectly, the exerciser should always have an extra mat surface of about 30-50 cm on all sides.

Buy a low-odor model

A disadvantage to rubber mats is that they smell strongly of chemicals. However, today there are also some models with almost no odor. These special models will help those with sensitivity to these unpleasant odors and those who are bothered by the strong smell.

Make sure you have good cushioning and slip resistance

Buy floor protection mats that won’t slip and are at least 1 cm thick. Thickness of this kind is usually considered the minimum requirement for cushioning heavy weight benches, including dumbbell weights.
